PSX Musicsoft Disklavier Floppy Diskette Instructions

I am a computer expert and found that Yamaha Musicsoft lacks proper documentation and even the video shows the wrong instructions when you purchase an album for a Disklavier Mark III or older that only has a floppy drive for loading music downloads. I had the hardest time figuring it out because of this. I have added this blog page to help others trying to figure out what to do with the PSX Files.

PSX File Format is not documented other than those for Sony PlayStations explaining what  the file-type or file format is. For Yamaha Musicsoft, it is an archive file format that contains the music files (very likely compressed) in a single file, similar to a zip or rar file. The only application that can extract the files from a psx file is the Musicsoft Downloader which is not available (broken link or missing page) on the Musicsoft website. Here are the steps I followed after I spoke to Musicsoft at their toll-free number:

Step 1: Very likely you have already purchased the album or song and you have a psx file on your computer. If not, go ahead and download the music file(s) from the website via the My Account link and log in to your account. Once you log in you should see your purchases and the link to see the details which offers the link to download again.

Step 2: Download the Musicsoft Downloader from the “Yamaha” website (not Musicsoft) from the following webpage: https://usa.yamaha.com/support/updates/msd_win_kbd.html  I used version 5.3.7 which I have uploaded here just in case they decide to move it, delete it or change it on everyone again.

Step 3: Install the Musicsoft Downloader. Once you run the installer, it appears as though it did not install, there will be no application links or desktop icons anywhere, because it associates the psx files to the application allowing you to simply double-click on the psx file to launch the application. The application puts a new icon to the psx files that looks like a key. That’s the only indication that the app is installed.

Step 4: Double-click on the PSX file you want to transfer to a floppy. Musicsoft Downloader will open and require to format the floppy diskette and then extract the contents of the psx file to the diskette. You only have to identify if your floppy in the drive is a 2DD or 2HD floppy diskette as indicated on the diskette itself. Click OK and you will see the drive start the process of creating the music diskette. It creates an ESEQ formatted diskette with ESEQ music files. From what I see, the floppy is only readable by the Disklavier unit once the application finishes writing the music to the diskette.

Step 5: Insert the diskette into your Disklavier floppy drive and you can play the songs in the floppy.

Optionally you can copy the songs to the Disklavier unit using the FUNC key, Disk -> Press Enter, arrow right to SongCopy -> Press Enter -> Press Yes/+. Review the instructions in your Disklavier Manual.
